Before becoming a SCORE client, Jeff Becker received ad hoc requests to give motivational talks to high school students. This he did primarily as a pastime while he continued to be employed as a teacher in the Lee County School System. After a few years and a few engagements Jeff decided that he wanted to try to build his passionate pastime into a full time career.

After meeting with SCORE it was determined that to accomplish this, Jeff needed to create a unique brand that would a.) distinguish his offering from all of the other motivational speakers on the high school circuit across the U.S.; b.) go beyond the "one and done" nature of other speakers by offering a range of products in order to deepen relationships and maximize revenue opportunities and, c.) obtain National recognition/appeal with engagements that went beyond the SWFL school system. All of this had to be accomplished on a shoestring budget funded by his speaker fees and as a secondary activity to his full-time teaching position.

My successes. 

In less than two years, Jeff has moved from giving occasional ad hoc motivational speeches in SWFL to creating the High School Leadership Program Brand "Can Do U” which is poised to become a significant player in youth leadership programs. The company has been engaged throughout Florida and six other states including Alaska, has earned recognition in national media and various educational publications, and is profitable and debt-free.

How SCORE helped. 

Jeff created the "Can Do U" high school program that encourages students to become their best selves. Jeff was struggling, “trapped in my own head,” before working with SCORE mentor Trevor Pedler. Together they worked on branding, marketing and advertising.

What's great about my mentor? 

Before score, I was thinking and rethinking different strategies, designs, methods, names and scripts for my business. It was maddening. The worst part was that I had no one to hold me accountable. I found myself in a doom loop taking two steps forward accompanied by two or more back. Then I met Trevor, my SCORE-appointed mentor. I remember the first meeting, he asked me what I was looking for in a mentor. I was looking for someone to "use as a sounding board, and someone to hold me to my word, ensuring I drive a strategy all the way through." He turned out to be so much more than that. He was a real expert on branding, marketing, advertising, and entrepreneurship. We are coming up on knowing each other two years, and he is still as supportive as he was on day one. He continues to communicate his belief in me. He gently guides me back when I begin to stray from the agreed upon strategy. Most importantly, he makes me feel like I'm not alone, which is priceless. I conclude most of our meetings and phone calls with, "well Trevor, that's why I pay you the big bucks," because I continue to find myself wowed at the amount of value our meetings have. I can't thank SCORE enough for pairing me with such a great mentor. I know I'm going to be successful thanks to Trevor and SCORE and the way they care about people and their dreams.
